日本舞踊とは、盆踊りや各地の民俗舞踊など日本の舞踊の総称ではなく、日本の伝統芸能の1つのジャンルとして確立しているものです。
"舞踊"という言葉は、明治末に坪内逍遥が上方の"舞"と江戸の"踊り"とを合わせて創ったと言われています。
日本舞踊には、歌舞伎舞踊、新作・創作舞踊、御祝儀舞踊という3つの大きな柱があり、その時代、時代を取り入れて、昔からのものを継承しながら、今も日々新たに生まれ続けているのです。

Nihon Buyo is established as one of dance genre in Japan and it is not general term for Japanese dance such as bon-dance or folk dance. It is said that Shoyo Tsubouchi created the word "Buyo" by putting together "Mai" of West Japan and "Odori" of East Japan in Meiji era. Nihon Buyo has 3 pillars: "Kabuki Buyo (Buyo for Kabuki)", "Shinsaku and Sosaku Buyo (new and creative Buyo)", and "Goshugi Buyo (Buyo for celebration)". It adopts style of the times and keeps changing itself being inherited to the next generation.
